About Kevin Burge

Apart from excelling in entrepreneurship, Kevin Burge of North Carolina loves sports. He is a huge fan of a couple of teams that play different games in North Carolina. Some of these teams include the Charlotte Hornets, UNC Hoops, and Carolina Panthers. Two of Kevin Burge’s favorite teams play in the major leagues. Sports are a huge part of North Carolina, so Burge’s profound interest in the game is well-founded.

There are North Carolina sports teams and athletes at every competition level in the country. They include the National Football League (NFL), the National Basketball Association (NBA), the NASCAR Cup Series, the National Hockey League (NHL), the United Soccer League, and Major League Lacrosse (MLL). Some of the most competitive school leagues are in North Carolina.

They also have minor basketball, baseball, ice hockey, soccer, and football leagues, all of which are Burge’s favorites. North Carolina hosts the State Games of North Carolina annually for amateurs.

North Carolina Professional Major League Teams

A couple of North Carolina professional teams play in the major leagues. Some of Kevin Burge’s most loved teams are on this list. They include:

‌The Charlotte Hornets. Founded in 1988, this basketball team is part of the NBA. The team plays at Spectrum Centre stadium in uptown Charlotte.

‌The Carolina Panthers. This American football team was founded in 1995 and is part of the NFL. The team’s official stadium is the Bank of America Stadium in uptown Charlotte.

‌The Carolina Hurricanes. Based in the Raleigh Metro area, the team is part of the NHL. While it was founded in 1972, the team has only played in North Carolina since 1997. The Carolina Hurricanes’ official stadium is the PNC Arena.

‌The North Carolina Courage. This professional women’s soccer team is based in Cary. Founded in 2017, the team is part of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The team’s official stadium is the Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park.

‌Charlotte FC. Founded in 2019, this official MLS soccer team is based in Charlotte.

Kevin Burge is and has been a huge basketball fan for a long time. His team, the Charlotte Hornets, was the first North Carolina professional team to play in the NBA. They played their first NBA match during the 1988-1989 season.

‌North Carolina’s professional basketball. The first professional basketball team was the Carolina Cougars, which started playing in the NBA in 1969 but moved to St. Louis in 1974.

‌North Carolina college basketball. North Carolina college basketball is quite popular. The state has had many successful college teams in the country. This goes for both men’s and women’s college basketball. The state’s college basketball can be pretty competitive — a quality that Burge admires a lot.

While North Carolina is also an important baseball destination, none of the teams there are Major League Baseball (MLB) teams. Instead, they’re part of the minor and collegiate summer leagues. Many schools and colleges in North Carolina that have athletics programs are also fielding their baseball teams, further promoting the sport. Kevin Burge thinks this is a great idea.

Some of North Carolina’s baseball teams include the Charlotte Knights, the Durham Bulls, the Asheville Tourists, the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the Hickory Crawdads, the Winston-Salem Dash, the Carolina Mudcats, the Down East Wood Ducks, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, and the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers.

Kevin Burge’s favorite football team, the Carolina Panthers, is the state’s professional team playing in the NFL. The team’s been in the Super Bowl twice, playing in the 2004 Super Bowl XXXVIII and the 2016 Super Bowl 50.

Kevin acknowledges North Carolina as one of the states with the most college teams playing at Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The FBS is the highest level in the NCAA. Other North Carolina college teams playing in the FBS include the:

  • Duke Blue Devils
  • North Carolina Tar Heels
  • East Carolina Pirates
  • NC State Wolfpack
  • Wake Forest Demon Deacons
  • Charlotte 49ers
  • Appalachian State Mountaineers

In addition, seven more North Carolina college teams play in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Many more schools are fielding teams in Division II and Division III. The Appalachian State Mountaineers in the FBS won the FCS division for three consecutive years since 2005.

Kevin Burge wouldn’t miss North Carolina’s motorsports for anything. The state has a history of NASCAR racing but stock car racing is currently the most popular sport. North Carolina is home to the Zmax Dragway, where some NHRA national events are held every year.

They also host three Grand National Cross Country events in off-road motorcycle racing. In addition, there’s a pretty good number of NASCAR Hall of Fame inductees living around Charlotte.

Despite having a slight presence in North Carolina, soccer is not as huge as football and basketball. Notwithstanding, Kevin Burge believes the sport has a promising future in the state. The women’s professional soccer team plays in the major leagues. In 2019, Charlotte FC joined the MLS and is set to start playing in 2022. The team has previously hosted some CONCACAF Gold Cup competitions at its home, The Bank of America Stadium.

Many soccer teams play at the national collegiate level. The North Carolina Tar Heels have won the most Division I national soccer championship competitions. The men’s team has also won national championships.

North Carolina is known to hold some significant golf tournaments including the United States Open Championship, the Ryder Cup, and the PGA Championship. Resorts like the Pinehurst Resort in the Sandhills have hosted the men’s and women’s U.S. Opens. They held both tournaments in 2014 setting a record in the country. They were the first ones to host the two tournaments in one year.
